Spruce Scoot 10k Recap

Today I ran in the Spruce Scoot!  This is the first race I have participated in for awhile.  While it felt great to race again it was painful!

I got up at 6am and couldn’t have my usual bagel, we are out!!!  So I settled for 2 pcs of white toast with peanut butter and some Gatorade!  I finally decided on what I was going to wear after looking at the local temps!  I decided on Nike shorts, a GracedByGrit tank, a long sleeve tech tee over that, and a pair of compression sleeves to help keep my legs warm.  I decided against tights due to it being in the mid 30’s.  I would rather wear shorts and knew at this temp I would be just fine!!

The race was at a Christmas Tree farm about an hour from the house so we left at 7:15 to get there in plenty of time to pick up my packet and check out where everything was.  We arrived at approx. 8:10!!  Perfect!

I picked up my packet and tried to mentally pull myself together!

Freaking out!!
One of the things that I loved/hated about the race is we had 3 distances to choose from: 1/2 Marathon, 10k and 5k.  I chose the 10k but everyone started together so I had NO IDEA who I was running against!!  This drove me crazy because I couldn’t size up my competition but at the same time, if you read this post, that was probably a very good thing!
At the start!!!
Trying to pull it together and focus!!
The course started on the road and was out and back for the first 5k.  After the first mile I did slow it down a bit due to not knowing if I would be able to hold that pace through the second half.  When the 5ker’s split from us I realized how few people were continuing on.  At this point the 1/2 and the 10k headed out into the tree farm.  I was at about 27ish minutes or so when I past the split which was literally 15 feet from the finish.

5k down!!  Yeah, the lady with the dog…they were pretty good!!
It was all fields and wooded so the second half of the race was a trail race for me!!  When I went down the path away from the 5k mark I knew I wasn’t going to PR.  The trails were immediately slowing me down and everyone for that matter.  Some of the ground was sandy, some muddy and some just so covered in leaves you couldn’t see the tree roots and had to be very careful.  It wasn’t at all hilly but still slowed us down!
Off to the trails!
I have not been running on trails much lately and decided that I really need to do more of it to keep myself conditioned.  At mile 5 the terrain got more technical and I slowed down more.  And was really mentally thrown!  I had to keep telling myself I could do this!  I knew we didn’t have much more to go but was already counting down the time I had until I could finish!  When I knew I had about a half mile left I tried to pick it up but until the last quarter mile the ground wasn’t letting me.  I pushed as much as I could at the end and FINALLY crossed the line!
I had 56:47 on my Garmin but hey who’s talking seconds?
They gave us all a cool piece of wood with the logo burnt into it instead of a finishers medal.  I think it is pretty cool and am glad I have something a little different to remember this race with.  And when you finish, first things first…ask the hubs if any women beat me that looked like they were in my AG.  Of course I got the good ol’ “I don’t know!!”
Finishers award!!
They had a heated tent set up with great food and heat.  I grabbed a hot chocolate, banana and a peanut butter and Nutella sandwich!!!  Which is amazing, just so you know.  I am going to have to start making them!
While waiting for the results KK showed me some crafts she had made while I was racing!  She also got a bag with a coloring book and box of crayons in it.
They had a table full of stuff for kids!
Then Santa and Mrs. Claus showed up!!  KK would not talk to them but I made sure to say hi!
When I saw the guy with the results walking around I kind of stalked him!!  When he sat them down for a second I snagged them up!!  It took me a second to find my name but when I did……1st in my AG baby!!!  Hell yeah!!  They gave a cute award for this as well.
First in 30-34 with 56:49
Now the nitty gritty is, I wasn’t as fast as I wanted to be.  The trails hurt and I slowed down too much.  The good is that I know I could have PR’d on a road course.  Here are my splits:
Mile 1: 8:41
Mile 2: 9:05
Mile 3: 9:07
Mile 4: 9:21
Mile 5: 9:55
Mile 6: 9:38
Last .12: 1:01<–I showed a total of 6.12 so I guess I ran the tangents well!!
Overall this race was a lot of fun and I performed right about where I should have.  I haven’t been running a lot and haven’t been running many “hard” runs.  I am happy with what I did and know I will only improve from here!!
Have you ever ran a half road/half trail race?
What does the temperature have to be before you wear tights?
Any tips for the trail run?

  1. Congrats on the age group win!!
What a cool finisher's prize! And I think it's great that they had stuff for the kids. I don't think I've ever seen that before (maybe because I don't have kids so I don't notice?).

  3. You may find this funny as I just did. I follow hungry runner girl blog and on Friday I was looking at her comments and being from Indiana I had to click on Hoosier Running Mom. I read that you were going to be doing the Spruce Scoot – what I didn't realize is that I ran part of the race with you Saturday. My name is Cindy and I was that lady with the dog ;). Congrats on your 1st place! Yes I agree the trails slowed the pace down but I figured that was better than a face plant from tree root 🙂

  4. Congrats on getting 1st in your AG! That's awesome! 🙂 Trails can be tough to PR on but they're a nice break from the road and a great way to test your running in a different way.
